Who’s on SciFi?

Of course I mean Doctor Who a British science fiction television show that first premiered on the BBC in 1963. I’m excited that starting tonight the newest version of the series is airing on the SciFi Channel. Its only a year after it debuted in the UK!! This might sound silly but historically it has been very difficult to view this series in the US without waiting several years and catchiest it on PBS or something. For it to air on a commercial network is quite a happy surprise.

I first met the Doctor in print oddly enough a catchy paperback with an introduction by Harlan Ellison brought me into the universe of the timelords and I eventually tuned in on my local PBS station to watch the fantastically compelling and unbelievably cheesy show. I’ve watched it on and off since then starting with Tom Baker’s Doctor and going forward. I’m not entirely sure I know what makes it so special. Time travel is of course a very compelling idea on its own and the doctor is an enigma that makes you want to tune in just to find out more about him.

Tonight on The SciFi Channel the Eccleston Era begins in the US after having been on the BBC for a year. I’ll be there eagerly watching again after a long absence. I wonder if it will be as special as it once was? I’ll let you know.

ps. For the uninformed the Doctor is a timelord from the planet Gallifrey. He is a bit of a renegade running off getting involved when the Timelords prefer to stick to observation. He generally has at least one or two companions tagging along from various adventures he has had. He moves around in time and space in his time machine (TARDIS – Time and Relative Dimensions in Space) which is supposed to change its appearance to match the surroundings around it when it lands. Unfortunatley for the Doctor his TARDIS has a broken chamealon circuit and is stuck in the shape of an old fashioned police call box. There is no telling where or when the Doctor will end up at times becaus the TARDIS is prone to breaking down or going off on a tangent beyond his control. Along the way he is likely to run into arch enemies like the Daleks or the Cybermen.
