“Where does it stop?”

“Are you telling me that tens of millions of Americans are involved with al Qaeda?” Leahy asked. “These are tens of millions of Americans who are not suspected of anything … Where does it stop?”
Senator Patrick Leahy in CNN Article: USA Today: NSA building massive database of phone records.

I’m not a fan of Senator Leahy by any stretch of the imagination but I have to agree with his reaction to the news from USA Today that AT&T, Verizon, and BellSouth have been turning over phone records of millions of American citizens to the government since 2001.

Why is this possible in The United States? Have the terrorists already won? Why aren’t there near riots in the streets over this issue and similar ones? Are we really so afraid that we are willing to give up all of our rights for the illusion that it will create real safety?

You can’t protect someone’s rights by taking them away. You can’t make life safer by putting the innocent in a prison to protect them from the evil in the world. This administration has shown blatant disregard for the very fabric that makes this country what it is supposed to be. Facing two more years of this is almost to horrifying a prospect to contemplate.

I am, at heart, a software developer though I am currently managing a small Information Technology department for a mid sized company located in my hometown of Jacksonville, FL. When I am not playing with the latest smart-phone or trying to become inspired to write code I read almost anything I can get my hands on from Pulp Era adventures to biographies of world leaders and everything in between.

  1. I really wonder at times if we are the only ones who feel like the Bush administration is dictating too much. Are people not willing to make a stand or is it that we don’t know how to make a stand?

  2. I fear too many people don’t worry about it becuase they have this trust of the current Administration. I don’t but even if I did that wouldn’t be enough for me. The precidents being set here will not go away when there is a new person in the White House. Giving the executive branch unchecked power is a recipe for tryanny.

  3. When will this gratuitous invasion of our civil liberties end?

So much for Home of the Free.
