Instagram vs Lightbox

So over the past few days I have been using Lightbox and Instagram side by side, many times posting the same pictures in both. I  did this because I wanted to have something to measure the Instagram for Android against and most Android photo sharing apps simply don’t measure up to the social abilities of Instagram.  Lightbox does, so do a few others like StreamZoo but so far Lightbox has been the closest.

Both apps allow you to take or import a picture and apply a filter to in and then upload it to their service, both allow you to share with twitter, facebook, tumblr, and foursquare at the same time.

Instagram is easier to set up and faster to quickly share a photo. Lightbox allows you to crop any picture you import or take quickly during the process which Instagram only does if the picture isn’t the right aspect ratio for their service.  Lightbox has, in my opinion a better social structure.  In a few minutes after installing lightbox I was following many people and had more than 40 followers and almost 60 likes on my photos and even a few questions and comments. In a week of Instagram I have only a few followers and much fewer interactions.

Lightbox is also much better suited for tablet use, it does not default to portrait mode like Instagram.

All things being equal I find myself liking Lightbox more but unfortunately Lightbox is only currently available on mobile for Android. Instagram was only available on iOS for more than a year, hopefully it won’t take that long for Lightbox to get to iOS.
