Book Review: The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson

The Cold Dish (Walt Longmire, #1)The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have to admit that I had never heard of Craig Johnson or Walt Longmire until the A&E television series. Once I watched the show though I couldn’t resist reading the source material for such colorful and rich characters.

I am glad I did. Craig Johnson’s world of law enforcement in Wyoming is a nice change of pace from your standard fare of the hard boiled city police procedural or the science heavy crime lab story. To be sure the law enforcement professionals in The Cold Dish use a crime lab and they have plenty of their own kind of procedure but against the back drop of the west it just has a different feel to it.

Johnson’s style includes frequent flash backs which at times can be come confusing if you aren’t paying close attention. Over all though this was a very good story with a rich set of characters and an ending that I didn’t see coming.

I am, at heart, a software developer though I am currently managing a small Information Technology department for a mid sized company located in my hometown of Jacksonville, FL. When I am not playing with the latest smart-phone or trying to become inspired to write code I read almost anything I can get my hands on from Pulp Era adventures to biographies of world leaders and everything in between.
